The two ideal windows to lay sod are spring (after the last hard frost) and early fall. In those windows the soil is warm enough for fast rooting but the air is cool and damp, so the new sod isn't fighting summer heat while it establishes. Fall sod, in particular, roots in beautifully and is ready to take off the following spring.
You can lay sod almost any time the ground is workable — the season mostly changes how much water the new lawn needs while it roots.
Yes, you can install sod in summer — we do it all season. The catch is water. Freshly laid summer sod needs consistent, generous watering for the first couple of weeks so it doesn't dry out before the roots take hold. As long as you're committed to watering (or have irrigation), a summer sod install looks great fast.
The one real limit is frozen or waterlogged ground. Once the soil freezes, sod can't make root contact, so we stop installing for the season. As long as we can prep the soil and the ground isn't frozen solid, sod is on the table.
Whenever you install it, the prep is what makes a sod lawn succeed. A proper sod installation means grading the area, prepping and loosening the soil, laying the sod with tight seams, and rolling it for solid soil contact — then a clear watering plan for the first two weeks.
