Landscaping & Design by North Shade Lawn
Landscapes designed with you — built to last

Landscaping in mid-Michigan.

Sod & turf installation, garden beds, grading, landscape lighting, full landscape renovations and more — we design and install it all across Greenville, Edmore and the surrounding mid-Michigan area.

Overview

Design and build, done right.

Great landscaping is equal parts vision and groundwork. We start by walking your property and listening to how you want to use it, then design a layout — beds, plantings, grading and focal points — that fits your home and the way you live.

From there our crew handles the full install: shaping beds, prepping soil, planting, laying sod and finishing every edge. We choose plants suited to Michigan's seasons and your maintenance style, so your landscape looks intentional the day we leave and keeps getting better as it fills in.

New build? We handle new-construction landscaping start to finish, turning bare lots into finished, move-in-ready grounds.

What's included.

How it works

Simple, start to finish.

1

Walkthrough & design

We visit, listen, and design a plan that fits your property, your goals and your budget.

2

Install & build

Our crew preps, plants and builds — shaping beds, laying sod and finishing every detail.

3

Finished & backed

We leave it clean and stand behind it with a 1-year warranty on plantings cared for properly.

Scope

From one garden bed to a whole property.

Some of our jobs are a single bed by the front step. Others are a full landscape renovation, or a brand-new house with nothing but bare dirt around it. We do both, and everything in between.

Garden beds and plantings

Layout, soil preparation, clean edging, and plants chosen for two things at once: surviving Michigan winters, and matching how much time you actually want to spend maintaining them. A beautiful design that needs more upkeep than you want to give it isn’t a good design.

Sod and lawn establishment

Grading, prep and sod installation, for new builds and for lawns that are past reviving. Sod gives you a finished lawn immediately instead of waiting out a season of seed.

Grading and drainage

Reshaping ground so water runs away from the house instead of pooling in the yard. This is unglamorous work that quietly prevents some very expensive problems.

Retaining structures and lighting

Walls that hold a slope and turn unusable grade into usable yard, plus low-voltage landscape lighting so the work still shows after dark.

New construction

Full landscape installs for newly built homes — from bare dirt to a finished, planted, graded property. Builders leave the outside to someone; this is that part.

Plantings are covered by a 1-year warranty when they’re watered and cared for the way we recommend at handover.

Estimates

What affects the price.

Landscaping quotes vary more than most people expect, because so much of the cost is in the ground rather than the plants. These are the main factors.

1

Size of the area

The square footage being planted, graded or sodded.

2

Plant size and quantity

Mature plants cost considerably more than young ones. Going with smaller stock and waiting a season or two is a real way to control the budget.

3

Soil and preparation

How much amending, hauling in, or hauling away the existing ground needs before anything can be planted.

4

Grading and earth moving

Moving dirt is usually the largest hidden variable in a landscape quote, and the one people least expect.

5

Hardscape elements

Edging, walls, steps and borders built into the design.

6

Site access

Whether equipment and material can get to the back yard, or whether it all comes through a gate by wheelbarrow.

Estimates are free, and we’d rather show you two or three ways to approach a project at different budgets than hand you one number and hope. Request a free estimate.

Questions

Common questions.

When is the best time to plant in mid-Michigan?

Spring and fall are ideal — cooler air with warm soil means less transplant stress and faster establishment. We plant through the summer as well; it simply means more attention to watering while everything settles in.

Do you design as well as install?

Yes, full design and install. We plan the layout, materials and plant selection with you before any work starts, so you know what you’re getting.

What does the plant warranty cover?

One year on plantings, provided they’re watered and maintained the way we recommend when we hand the job over. Get in touch and we’ll go over the specifics for your install.

Do you work on new construction?

Regularly. New-build landscape installs are a normal part of our work — we come in when the house is finished and the yard is still bare dirt.

Can you fix standing water in my yard?

Often, yes. Regrading so water slopes away from the house is usually the first thing to look at. We wrote about how that works here.

Can you install sod any time of year?

In Michigan, sod can go down almost any time the ground isn’t frozen — there’s more detail on timing and aftercare in our journal.
