Planning a Paver Patio: 5 Things to Decide Before You Build

A paver patio is one of the best investments you can make in your outdoor space — it adds living area, raises curb appeal, and (built properly) lasts for decades. But the difference between a patio you love and one you tolerate comes down to decisions made before the first paver is set. Here are the five that matter most.

1. How you'll actually use it

A spot for two chairs and a morning coffee is a very different build from an outdoor dining and grilling zone for a dozen people. Think about furniture, foot traffic and whether you'll want room for a fire pit or future outdoor kitchen. Size the space to the life you want to live on it.

2. Location, sun and drainage

Where the patio sits changes everything. Morning sun or evening shade? Close to the kitchen for easy entertaining? And critically — where does the water go? A good patio is graded to shed water away from your home's foundation. Getting the slope and base right is what keeps it from heaving, settling or pooling down the road.

3. Material and pattern

We build in pavers, natural stone and concrete, and each has its place. Pavers offer huge flexibility in color and pattern and are easy to repair. Natural stone brings a high-end, organic look. The laying pattern — running bond, herringbone, ashlar — sets the whole character of the space.

The base is the part nobody sees and everyone feels. A proper compacted base is the single biggest factor in whether a patio still looks great in ten years.

4. Edges, walls and the extras

Will you want a seat wall, steps, built-in lighting, or a fire feature? These are far easier (and cheaper) to plan in from the start than to add later. Even simple touches like a contrasting border course make a patio feel custom.

5. Who builds it

Hardscaping is equal parts craft and groundwork. Ask about base depth, drainage, and what happens if something settles. At North Shade Lawn we stand behind our hardscaping with a 5-year warranty — because we build it to earn it.
